NEWSLETTER – ISSUE 18 – MAY 2006

OUR MARCH MEETING

This was another of our popular Display Evenings when the theme was “The 1950’s”.

There was a good attendance and we were very pleased that so many members and visitors brought along memorabilia to display. Several members gave short talks about their experiences of those times and showed and discussed items they had kept all these years.

OUR LOCAL HISTORY WEEKEND 1st & 2nd APRIL

This was a great success with over 400 people attending over the two days. On display were around 700 photographs of the district plus two continuous slide shows and videos of local events. Additionally many of our documentary archives were on show. These created considerable interest especially the Census Returns from 1841 to 1901. Finally we had some audio memories of residents playing.

OUR APRIL MEETING

This was an illustrated talk by Philip Heath, a keen local historian. The subject was “The Diaries of John Joseph Briggs 1820 – 1875”. John Joseph as he liked to be called recorded the happenings, the changing trends and fashions in Melbourne in those years. It was a fascinating picture of life both in Melbourne and the wider world in those days. The large audience appreciated the quality of the talk and illustrations.

OUR NEXT MEETING ON TUESDAY MAY 16TH 2006.

This meeting is a combined Annual General Meeting and Talk. We will commence with the A.G.M. at 7.30pm which will include the election of Officers and Committee for the next twelve months. Any nominations can be made in accordance with Clause 4c of the proposed Constitution, a copy of which is enclosed. This Constitution will be subject to ratification by the membership at the A.G.M. Any nominations should be forwarded to Alan Kimber. (Tel: 01283 704042).

We have to report the resignations of Alan & Gill Hiley from their positions as Secretary and Treasurer of the group. We thank them both for the considerable work they have carried out for the group.

We will then hear an illustrated talk by Robin Trotter who will tell us about the “History of Burton Abbey”. Robin is an excellent speaker so this should be another memorable subject.

VISIT TO BURTON TOWN HALL TUESDAY 20TH JUNE 2006

Our June meeting is a visit to see behind the scenes at Burton Town Hall where we will be able to see Mayor’s Parlour, the robes and chains, the Council Chamber and Civic Insignia. This should be an interesting evening. Would members wishing to join the visit please give their names to Alan Kimber (01283 704042). Meeting details will follow. If you have already handed your name in, please re-confirm the booking.

OUR MEETING ON TUESDAY 18TH JULY 2006.

Barbara Fibiger will be talking about “Living Above the Shop”.
