FUTURE PROGRAMME

Tuesday 17th April.   “Repton School”. This famous school celebrates its 450th anniversary this year. Paul Stevens will be giving us an insight into the everyday lives of the students and staff over the centuries. This promises to be a fascinating evening.

Monday 7th May.   The village is organising a “party day” on this Bank Holiday to be held at the Den and Mitre Field between 2 and 5 pm. All sorts of games and entertainment are being organised aimed at families and children. We will be organising a children’s photo quiz.

Come along and join the fun!

Tuesday 15th May.   AGM followed by “A Backward Look at Everyday Items”.  Maureen Newton gave us a great talk last year discussing childhood games which included a lot of enjoyable audience participation. This time she will be talking about household and everyday items which were commonplace many years ago but have faded from use and from our memories.

Tuesday 19th June.    “Repton School Walk”. John Ward and Paul Stevens will lead an informal evening guided tour of the less well known areas of the school grounds and buildings. Numbers are limited so preference will be given to paid-up members. To book contact Alan Kimber (01283 704042).

Saturday and Sunday 22nd and 23rd June.  Repton Open Gardens will be held on this weekend. As usual we will be organising a photographic display in St. Wystan’s Church.

Tuesday 7th August.  “Visit to Foremark”. This is another evening guided walk. Julian Hawtree will take us into the delightful and historic Foremark Church and also into some parts of Foremark Hall. Again, numbers are limited so preference will be given to paid-up members.

To book contact Alan Kimber (01283 704042).

Tuesday 18th September.   This is planned as a “Members Night” when we hope that several members will give short talks about local historic subjects which interest them. If you have any ideas, please let us know.

Tuesday 16th October.     “The History of Trams”. Glyn Wilton, Curator of  Crich Tramway Museum will talk about this interesting subject.

Tuesday 20th November.    “Derbyshire Ghosts” by Keith Blood. Keith gave us an excellent talk last year about the Victorian Schoolroom. We have invited him back to talk about a completely different subject.

Saturday 1st December.     “Coffee Morning”. This will be a joint event with Repton Village Society. Apart from the Coffee and Mince Pies, there will be a “Valuation Session” by Charles Hanson, a display of work by the students of Repton School Art Department, a photographic display by our group plus a raffle or tombola. Repton Village Society has held these very successful Coffee Mornings for several years and we look forward to joining them. Admittance is free.

Friday 7th to Monday 10th December.   St Wystan’s Church are organising a “Christmas Tree Festival” at which different village organisations can decorate a tree for display in the Church. More about this later in the year.

Looking forward to 2008.

We now have a small sub-committee working away at providing an interesting and varied programme for 2008. It may seem very early to do this but good speakers soon get booked up. We have made an excellent start and will be publishing the 2008 programme later this year.

Heritage Map

You may already have seen the new Heritage Map installed by the Parish Council near the Arch which shows landmarks and special buildings in Repton. Our group assisted the Parish Council by choosing the illustrations of these buildings and providing the descriptions of them. The cost of the project was met from a bequest from the late Rhoda Hemmings and donations from Repton School, Toyota, East Midlands Airport and South Derbyshire District Council.
